7 Mistakes That Make Your Site Invisible to AI

These mistakes show up on most sites we audit — and each one is enough to keep you out of ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI answers.

Why your site can be good AND invisible

A site can be polished, fast, loved by its visitors — and still absent from every AI answer. These are not the same criteria. AIs don't "browse" your site like a human: they read your code, extract passages, and decide from a few signals whether you deserve to be cited.

Here are the 7 mistakes we see most often in audits, from the most radical to the most subtle.

Mistake #1: blocking AI robots without knowing it

This is the most brutal one: a line in your robots.txt file that denies access to GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot. Result: your site simply doesn't exist for those AIs.

The trap is that this blocking is rarely intentional. It often comes from a security plugin, an anti-scraping setting added years ago, or a firewall that treats every robot as a threat. And since nothing visibly breaks, nobody notices.

The test: open yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for "Disallow" lines. Or run a diagnostic that checks all 16 major AI robots at once.

Mistake #2: content that only exists in JavaScript

If your site is a JavaScript application (React, Vue, an animated "one-page" site), the text your visitors see may not be in the page's initial code — it's assembled by the browser afterwards.

Google usually gets around to executing it. But most AI robots don't: to them, your page is empty. You can have the best content in your market — it doesn't exist.

The test: right-click your page → "View source" → search for a sentence of your text. If it's not there, AIs can't see it.

Mistake #3: no subheadings phrased as questions

AIs build their answers by looking for question-answer pairs. A page whose subheadings read "Our services", "Our philosophy", "Contact" gives them nothing to hold on to.

The same page with "How much does coaching cost?", "What happens in the first session?" becomes a mine of quotable passages — without changing the substance of the content.

Mistake #4: the answer buried at the end of the paragraph

You ask the question in the heading, then start with three sentences of context before getting to the answer. AIs extract short passages: if the first two sentences after a heading don't answer, they move on to the next site.

The simple rule: answer first, nuances after. Exactly like this paragraph.

Mistake #5: no author, no date, no sources

Between two equivalent pieces of content, AIs favor the one that shows who is speaking (an identified author, a real company), when (an update date), and what it relies on (sources, verifiable figures).

An anonymous, undated site sends the opposite signal: generic content, potentially outdated, impossible to credit. Specialists call these E-E-A-T signals — but you don't need the jargon to act: sign, date, source.

Mistake #6: talking about yourself instead of answering questions

"Industry leader since 2005", "a passionate team", "tailor-made solutions": these pages answer none of the questions your customers actually ask AIs. They will never be cited, because there is nothing to cite.

Reverse the logic: start from your customers' real questions (the ones they ask you on the phone!) and turn each question into a section of your site. Your expertise becomes extractable.

Mistake #7: content frozen for years

AIs check dates and downrank old content, even excellent content. A brochure site "finished" in 2022 and never touched again loses a little ground every month to competitors who publish and update.

You don't need a daily blog: a serious update of your key pages, with a visible date, keeps you fresh in the eyes of AIs.

How many of these mistakes is your site making?

Each of these mistakes can be detected in minutes when you know where to look. The free TryGEO diagnostic checks all 7 automatically — AI robot access, content rendering, question structure, credibility signals, freshness — and tells you which ones to fix first, in plain language.
