Your Visibility Is Never Settled: Why It Shifts Constantly

A 'finished' website doesn't exist. Updates, plugins, certificates, aging content: here's everything that can break your visibility without warning — and how to catch it in time.

The myth of the "finished" website

Many business owners see their website as a project with an end: you build it, you publish it, done. Reality is less comfortable: a website lives in an environment that changes constantly — and most visibility failures happen without anyone touching anything.

Your Google ranking and your chances of being cited by AIs depend on dozens of small things that can go wrong at any moment. Here are the most common.

What can break without warning?

A plugin update that rewrites your robots.txt. A classic on WordPress: a security or caching plugin updates itself and starts blocking robots it deems suspicious — including ChatGPT's or Perplexity's. Nothing changes visually. You discover the problem months later, once traffic has already dropped.

A security certificate that expires. The little HTTPS padlock relies on a certificate that needs regular renewal. Most hosts do it automatically — until the day the renewal silently fails. Result: a scary security warning for your visitors, and a very negative signal for Google.

A hosting outage at the wrong moment. A few hours of downtime now and then seem harmless. But if a robot happens to visit during the outage, it records that your site doesn't respond. Repeated outages end up costing rankings.

A redesign that loses pages. You change design or agency, and old pages disappear without redirects. Every link that pointed to them — from Google, from other sites, from AI answers — now leads nowhere.

Your content simply aging. Even with zero failures, dated content loses ground: AIs favor recent sources, and your competitors keep publishing.

Why does nobody notice in time?

Because nothing visibly breaks. Your site displays normally in your browser; customers who have your card keep calling. Visibility degrades backstage, and the final symptom — fewer new customers — arrives weeks or months after the cause.

That's the fundamental difference with a classic outage: when your site is down, you see it. When your visibility is down, you see nothing.

How do you catch these problems in time?

The logic is the same as for health: regular check-ups catch problems while they're still small. Concretely, three levels of vigilance:

  1. Daily checks of the vitals: does the site respond? Is the security certificate valid and far from expiry? Do AI robots still have access? These are mechanical checks — perfect for an automated tool.
  2. A regular full audit: every month, run the site through the complete review — content, technical, credibility signals — and compare with the previous month. What matters is the diff: which problems appeared, which were fixed, is the score going up?
  3. An immediate alert when something breaks: not a report you have to remember to check — an email that arrives when the site goes down, when the certificate nears expiry, when an AI robot gets blocked.

Do you need a tool for this?

You can do these checks by hand — if you remember to, every day, without exception. In practice, nobody does: it's exactly the kind of repetitive task that's never a priority until the day it should have been.

That's why we built TryGEO Monitoring: daily checks of the vitals, an automatic full audit every month with comparison, and email alerts as soon as a problem appears. From €12 per month — cheaper than a failure discovered months too late.
